(NEWPORT, Vt.) A Vermont judge agreed to the state’s request and fined the owner of a former UPS store after he and his employees violated Gov. Phil Scott’s mask mandate.

WCAX reported that Andre Desautels was fined $850. The owner, whose store lost its franchise because it openly dismissed the statewide mask mandate, was fined $50 for the 17 days that his store was out of compliance.

Desautels, however, argued that the fine should have only been $1 per day, since he thought the mask mandate was illegal.

The state attorney general and Desautels agreed that there was no evidence that anyone in the store was infected with COVID-19, or that the owner influenced other businesses to follow suit.

According to WCAX, Desautels has moved his operation to Derby.
