NASHVILLE, TN — The Tennessee General Assembly has approved two additional sales tax holidays besides the traditional sales tax holiday on clothing, school supplies, and computers.

The two additional sales tax holidays are on Foods and Gun safe and Safety Equipment.

The traditional sales tax holidays on clothing, school supplies, and computers will begin on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 12.01 AM and ends on Sunday, August 1, 2021, at 11.59 PM.

During those times, clothing, school supplies, and computers can be purchased tax-free. Though there will still be certain restrictions, it is also eligible for online purchases. The items purchased must be used for personal only and not for business or trade.

The new additional sales tax holiday on foods also includes food ingredients and prepared foods. This sales tax holiday will start on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 12.01 AM and ends on Thursday, August 5, 2021, at 11.59 PM. This includes qualified sales of prepared food by restaurants, food trucks, caterers, and grocery stores.

The food and food ingredient that is exempt from tax defined as liquid, concentrated, solid, frozen, dried, or dehydrated substances that are sold to be ingested or chewed by humans and are consumed for their taste or nutritional value. Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, candy, dietary supplements, or prepared food are not exempted from tax.

The Gun safe and safety equipment sold at retail will be exempted from sales and use tax. The sales tax holiday period begins on Thursday, July 1, 2021, at 12.01 AM and ends on June 30, 2022.
