AKRON, OH — Mayor Horrigan, on June 23, announced the opening of applications for the Mayor's Citizens Institute class of 2021, which will run from late August to November 2021.
The Mayor's Citizens Institute is a free, 10-week civic learning experience. A group of about 25 Akron residents will meet once a week in the evenings to engage with city departments and leaders.
The class is modeled after best practices in other thriving cities. Participants will be diverse and eager to learn how their local government works and how they can assist Akron in growing and succeeding.
Attendees will learn about available city programs and services, meet city staff, and participate in mock decision-making processes. They will discuss the city's charter form of government, its responsibilities and duties, and public accountability.
The City of Akron hopes to foster pride, progress, and community partnerships by engaging with a diverse group of Akron residents. The institute aims to pique citizens' interest in public service, increase citizen engagement in city events and processes, give citizens a voice in their community, and further educate participants on Akron.
Applicants must be at least 18 years old and Akron residents. The application deadline for the 2021 Mayor's Citizens Institute is July 19, 2021. Citizens can find the application, program description, and program dates at www.akronohio.gov/MCI.
