At least one deputy shot and killed a man in South Carolina on Wednesday as officers tried to arrest him on serious charges, the sheriff said.
The Greenville South Carolina County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Earl Hunter, 40, of Laurens.
He attacked deputies and marshals when he was found inside a home near Greenville, Sheriff Hobart Lewis said.
Lewis says officers went into the residence and looked for Hunter, who was hiding in the back. He pulled a firearm and began fighting them, which resulted in the shooting..
Hunter's charges were not immediately released, but the sheriff said they were "very, very, very serious."
A South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) investigation is underway as the deputies are on paid leave.
The sheriff, in an odd twist, showed no empathy for the seriousness of the incident when he casually said, “This guy was obviously not ready to go to jail".
