Dawn Farm in Ann Arbor, Michigan is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people recover from addiction since 1973. Now, they are asking for a bit of help from the community. Dawn Farm, together with Alpha Beta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. have launched a bra and underwear drive through June 30th, 2021.
“About 40% of our clients are homeless. We want to be sure they have all the necessities when they begin treatment,” Olivia Vigiletti, Communications Director told me. “We’re looking for new socks and underwear and new or gently used bras and sports bras.”
Dawn Farms asks for people donating to be mindful of all genders and sizes. The most commonly requested bra sizes are in the A, B, and C range. Dawn Farm believes anyone can recover from an addiction. They offer many different services and create individual treatment plans to attain long-term recovery. Their continuum of care includes detox, outpatient treatment, long-term residential treatment, and transitional housing.
While many treatment facilities had to close during the pandemic, Dawn Farm did not. “The last sixteen months have been challenging due to Covid,” Olivia Vigiletti said, “but we have been fortunate to have more than one site. We were able to turn our detox site into a quarantine and testing site.”
Throughout the pandemic, clients were admitted, after being quarantined and tested, on a bi-weekly basis in rounds of 12 clients at a time. The clients have had access to tablets connected to the internet so they could attend virtual 12-step and recovery meetings.
One of Dawn Farm’s goals is to remove barriers that can stand in the way of someone getting treatment. Those barriers include things like education, employment, and peer support. They do youth outreach, jail groups, and help clients enroll in public benefits programs.
Dawn Farm is the place where addicts can go for help, even if they are unable to pay for treatment. No one is denied services because they don’t have insurance or don’t have enough money.
Clients in the residential program stay on a 64-acre farm. Since having a sense of purpose and routine is important to recovery, clients work on the farm and care for the many animals, like pigs and chickens, and tend the organic garden. The farm has 36 beds and the stay is anywhere from 90–120 days. After that, Dawn Farm accesses the client’s treatment program and guides them to the next phase of recovery which may be six months of outpatient aftercare or transitional housing. Dawn Farm provides a recovery support system that continues long after they have completed treatment. The farm is located at 6633 Stony Creek Road, Ypsilanti, Michigan.
