(AUSTIN, Texas) Gun violence in Austin has seen an increase compared to last year, with 37 murders so far this year – 2020 saw 45. The Austin Police Department launched the Violence Intervention Program in April to try and combat gun violence by civilians.
The program investigates people actively involved in crime and reviews violent cases as a proactive way to stop further violence. The program mainly focuses on illegally possessed firearms, and not violence that may excel from police intervention or excessive force.
APD have seized 78 illegally possessed guns and have made 44 arrests so far as part of the program, according to KUT.
"Our efforts to fight against violent and gun crime remain steadfast," interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said in a press release. "This is a marathon and not a sprint. We will continue to work in partnership with our community and other law enforcement agencies to keep Austin safe."
The program is in effect until the end of August.
