According to recent statistics from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, over 4,000 fully vaccinated people have now tested positive for COVID-19 in the state. But thankfully, local media has reported that most of the cases were either asymptomatic or mild.

It's important to note that the number of cases amongst fully vaccinated people in Massachusetts is very low (approximately 1 in 1000 people who received the vaccine have tested positive for Covid-19). But still, this groundbreaking news raises questions about how quickly the vaccines will enable us to return to normal life. Quoting the Boston Herald:

"Virus cases are at record lows in Massachusetts, as the more contagious Delta variant appears to be taking off in different parts of the country. With these highly contagious variants, it's key to get as many people vaccinated as quickly as possible."

Publicly available data shows that 60% of Massachusetts residents are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. And with over 8.9 million doses administered within the state, it's clear that Massachusetts is on the right path. However, the state isn't out of the woods yet.

In essence, the entire nation is in a race against time. We need to vaccinate as many people as possible before more infectious variants spread amongst the population and cause havoc. And with vaccines providing (at least) some protection against Covid-19, getting vaccinated will significantly reduce the odds of hospitalization or death from the disease.

The Delta variant of the coronavirus is spreading so fast in the United States that the new strain will likely become widespread in the country within weeks. According to experts tracking the spread rate of infection, Delta is the most contagious variant in the world (so far).

A research review of more than 242,000 infections nationwide over the previous six months has found that the Delta variant appears to account for at least 14 percent of all new infections in the United States. And if it continues to follow its current trajectory, the damage could be absolutely devastating.

Delta recently became the most prevalent strain in the United Kingdom, accounting for more than 60% of new cases. There have been reports that the delta variant produces more severe symptoms, according to WHO experts. But additional studies need to be done to validate those findings. Nonetheless, there are strong indications that the delta strain may cause different symptoms than previous variants of Covid-19.
