The events on January 6th (called the 2021 United States Capitol Attack) and President Donald Trump's connection to it ended up having devastating consequences for the Trump organization. Many businesses cut ties with them (including PGA of America and many others). The city of New York was one of them.
Just seven days after the event, New York City ended its $17 million a year contract to run a public golf course with the Trump organization. Now, former President Donald Trump is suing them for breach of contract.
Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city would cut off all ties to the Trump Organization, effectively ending the Trump organization's operating deal for Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point in Throgs Neck as well as two ice skating rinks and a merry-go-round in Central Park.
In an announcement on Jan. 13, Mayor de Blasio said, "We won't work with a criminal association."
In a public statement, the Trump organization stated, "Mayor de Blasio's actions are purely politically motivated, have no legal merit, and are yet another example of the mayor's efforts to advance his own partisan agenda and interfere with free enterprise."
Despite the lawsuit, mayoral press secretary Bill Neidhardt repeated de Blasio's remarks from January:
"Donald Trump directly incited a deadly insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. You do that, and you lose the privilege of doing business with the City of New York. It's as simple as that."
The lawsuit, filed in New York state court, states that New York City has no right to terminate their agreement with the Trump Organization. The Trump organization is demanding that the contract be honored as is or the city pay out millions of dollars. They also stated that nowhere in the 566-page contract is there any clause that would allow the city of New York to break their contract with the Trump organization due to their disagreement with the events of the January 6th insurrection.
New York City countered by saying that it had "appropriately followed the end cycle" in its agreement, as per a representative for the city's Law Department.
Mayoral press secretary Bill Neidhardt reiterated, "The actions of Mr. Trump to incite a deadly riot at the Capitol on January 6th caused a breach of the Ferry Point contract by eliminating options for hosting championship events and we will vigorously defend the City's decision to terminate the contract.
It's unclear at this time whether the Trump organization has a chance of getting their contract with the city of New York renewed.
