One thing is guaranteed to affect every life, all of nature, and the entire universe. This one thing occurs all around us constantly. It is happening in us this very minute. Nothing is untouched by it. So long as time continues, it is perhaps the single most permanent thing in existence. It is known to be one of the few things in the universe that is unchangeable - change.

"There are no permanent changes because change itself is permanent." Ralph L. Woods (1898-1950)

Whether we want change or not, we cannot stop it from happening. Sure, we can refuse to change, but that refusal will change something regardless. Everything in life connects to the past and the future. All we have is the present moment, which is constantly slipping into the past.

Because of the flow of time, we can't change the past. The only control any of us has is in the present. We can influence or affect outcomes in the future by what we do now, at this moment.

While we can't change the past, we can use it in the present. The plans we made can be recalled and acted on at any time, thereby affecting outcomes in the future.

We have two choices. We can sit back and watch the future unfold or take action and create the future we want.

"The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking." Albert Einstein (1879-1955)

By understanding change, many things in the future come under your control. Take your body, for example. You age every second of every day as you move into the future. Except for cerebral cortex neuron cells, every cell in your body is replaced every seven to ten years. Can you imagine that? Every cell from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet (outside of some brain cells)!

But the quality of the body as it changes is affected by what you do. When you do healthy things like exercise and eat right, you create a different body than if you lay around and eat junk food. You have a great deal of control over what that new body will be in seven years, and much sooner, depending on what you do!

"You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight." Jim Rohn (1930-2009)

The five-part process for creating your future

Let's look at a five-part process that can help you change the future outcomes of your life. The process is:

Your power to affect the future is determined by 1. what you know, 2. your skills, 3. how you think, 4. who you are becoming, and 5. what you do.

In this simple process lies the potential to create the future you want. All you must do is act. Following is a brief overview of each of the five parts.

What you know

You can leverage the knowledge you gain over the years to create significant change in your life. The more you know, the more opportunities you will be able to see.

Your skills

When you develop the right skills as you build knowledge, you gain invaluable abilities to create the future you want.

How you think

The most crucial thing that will determine how change affects life is your basic mindset. When you have the right mindset, you set yourself up to grow, which will greatly affect what you create. Develop and maintain a growth mindset, not a fixed mindset, in your life. You can read more about mindset here: How to Easily Change Your View of the World.

Who you are becoming

Since life is about continuous change, you are becoming a slightly different person moment by moment. The great thing about this natural change is your control in the present as to what you are becoming. When you leverage this fact, you can take control in charting and walking your future course.

What you do

In the end, it is what you do or do not do that brings the previous four items to bear on the present moment.

You can create anything you want in life when you understand and act on these five basic principles.

Example

Let's follow a simple example about almost everyone's favorite subject, money.

When you gain knowledge about money and develop the skill of using it, you can control it. What you do with this knowledge and skill is determined by how you think and who you desire to become. It then only takes action to do the thing you desire.

If you want to save for a comfortable retirement one day but decide to spend every penny you earn, you will retire penniless. But if you seek to learn about money and develop the skills necessary to save consistently and invest properly, things can change because you are thinking and planning. And by knowing who you are becoming, your outcome will be different. By taking consistent action, you can retire comfortably.

You can apply this process to anything in life, so why not give it a try? You have everything to gain and nothing to lose!

"A tiny change today brings a dramatically different tomorrow." Richard Bach (1936-present)

Final thoughts

While we all know from experience nothing is guaranteed, we also know doing the right things can produce solid results. Since change is inevitable, why not capitalize on this fact and use it to your advantage? Resisting change is futile. Embrace change in life, and you will go far.

"Your life does not get better by chance, it gets better by change." Jim Rohn (1930-2009)

Take control of your future by adhering to the five-step process. Simply remember to:

Considering change is going to happen, why not chart your own course. That way, you will likely wind up in the place or position you want to be. If you fail to do this, you may suffer from the consequences of ignoring the inevitable change that will occur in your life.

"What we have been is an established and unchangeable fact. What we can yet become is an unlimited, boundless opportunity." Jim Rohn (1930-2009)
