Meet Lupe the toco toucan and other feathered friends at Zoo Atlanta's Wild Encounter

ATLANTA, GA — Zoo Atlanta will open Wild Encounter for your close and personal experience with Toucan and other birds on Monday and Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at World of Wild Theater.

A zoo Educator will tell you about the lives of birds and how you can help them if you find one in your own backyard and around the world. After that, you'll be joined by a representative of the Animal Care Team who will introduce you to one of Zoo Atlanta's ambassador birds, followed by an up-close encounter with Lupe the toco toucan!

Wild Encounter will be included with free-flighted birds, so please pay close attention to these qualifications:

- Participants must be at least 8 years old.

- Anyone under the age of 16, must be accompanied by an adult who has bought the ticket as well.

- 15 minutes before the encounter, meet outside the World of Wild Theater door.

- Please keep in mind that all Wild Encounters have a limited number of spots available.

- This activity is ADA accessible.

This activity will cost $30 for public and $26 for members. These prices don't include the Zoo admission fee. Visitors who have traveled outside of the United States or Canada within the last ten days will not be permitted to participate due to animal safety rules.

Below are the age specifications:

- All participants aged 8 and up must purchase a ticket.

- Children under the age of are admitted free of charge, however they are not permitted to participate in the interactive component of the experience.

- Kids under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who has bought a Wild Encounter ticket as well.

- Children under the age of 4 must be carried or held by an adult all the time.

Every visitor must follow the zoo's guidelines in order to enjoy the event. Here are the safety policies that you have to read and understand before your visit:

1. Before coming to the zoo, we ask that all Wild Encounters participants watch the quick health assessment.

2. Ahead of your encounter date, all participants must complete a digital waiver.

3. Wild Encounters is an optional event that requires participants to wear a face mask if they are 2 years old or older. Medical exemptions are not permitted for the health and safety of Zoo staff, visitors or animals.

4. If you or a member of your group is ill, please come back at a later time.

5. Keep at least six feet apart from those who aren't in your party to help us develop social distancing rules.

6. Participants in the Wild Encounter do not need to purchase timed entry tickets. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the Wild Encounter.

7. Non-members can purchase entry tickets in advance or on the day of the encounter.

8. On the duration of the event, all Zoo employees will wear a face mask.

Regarding the reservation, you can read these policies:

1. Reservations must be paid in full at the time of booking.

2. No refunds or reschedules will be given for no-shows; but, during the COVID-19 pandemic, participants who feel sick on the morning of the event should notify Zoo Atlanta, and we will be pleased to refund or reschedule your visit for the protection of our animals, employees and visitors.

3. Cancellations made more than 7 days prior to the booked visit will be refunded in full.

4. If you seek a reschedule fewer than 7 days before your scheduled event date, you will be charged a 10% rescheduling fee based on the entire cost of your reservation.

5. Even due to rain, visitors will not be refunded or rescheduled.

6. In the event of severe or inclement weather, Zoo Atlanta will notify you within 15 minutes of the program start time and give you a refund (of the program cost alone) or the option to reschedule.

On the day of encounters, you will be expected to follow these things for your own enjoyment:

- Encounters will take place through secured contact, in which you will not be in the same physical location as the animal but will feed them through a barrier. Upon entering the lion facility, all participants must soak the bottoms of their shoes in a weak bleach solution; please dress appropriately.

- Participants are allowed to bring their phones/cameras and capture pictures of the encounter; however, video recording is not allowed.

- Follow all directions from animal care teams and Zoo workers behind the scenes to protect the safety of our animals and visitors. Those who fail to follow instructions will be asked to leave the session without a refund.

- Strollers and carts are not permitted in the back areas.

- Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes are required for all visitors. In the backstage areas, flip flops, sandals and other similar footwear are not allowed.

- During the interaction, your clothes may become soiled. Please plan ahead of time.
