Who doesn't love ice cream? OK I know a few people don't, but for many it's one of the highlights of summer.

Sometimes you don't want just a cone or a scoop in a dish. You want ice cream art - an extravaganza that makes you feel you are getting the ultimate indulgence. Mason's Sweet Shoppe, can do that for you.

The tiny ice cream store, located at 1475 West Memorial Highway, Suite 901 C, in Union Grove, NC, is doing big business. They move customers in and out quickly for their special creations. It's right off the interstate for easy access if you're headed through the area.

The milkshakes come in keepsake Mason jars and seem to be the most popular offering. That was what we decided to indulge in when we visited. These are $8 in the jar, but if you prefer not to get a keepsake jar you can get a deconstructed version in a bowl for $6.

Selections are both seasonal, and vary by day. Only a limited number of each shake is available. If there is a crowd and you are waiting in line outside, take a picture of the QR code on their sign with your cell phone, and it should take you to a copy of their menu for the day.

One of my party chose chose the Cookie Monster, a cookies 'n cream creation with whipped cream and chow ate sauce and chocolate sprinkles. Usually it is topped with a chocolate chip cookie, but for a brownie topper since they had run out of cookies that day. The other chose the Chocolate Coma, with chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, chocolate sprinkles and the brownie topper. Yes, they were our dinner for the night!

The quality of the ice cream, Asby's Sterling from Michigan, was excellent, as were the Amish brownies that topped our shake.

A couple of other milkshakes of note were the Razzle Dazzle made with raspberry cheesecake ice cream and topped with a full piece of dense cheesecake, and the beautiful Candy Palooza with cotton candy on top.

The banana splits were huge and are also quite popular. Of course, there are also all kinds of flavors (16) of ice crea, you can buy by the scoop or cone, with various toppings.

The employees are still taking precautions for COVID. While masks are not required, their sign requested that only one party at a time be in the store to place orders. Not all customers abided by this, but most maintained a distance from other customers. The staff was seen sanitizing whenever they got a break in customers.

There are a few tables inside for seating and several picnic tables outside.

We enjoyed the special treat of Mason's Sweet Shoppe, and the nice folks who work there. If you are an ice cream lover we recommend you pay them a visit.
