Moving out is a big responsibility that not everybody is ready to take on. But once you take that leap of faith, you have that gut feeling to remain independent and never have to return to living under your parent’s roof.
My girlfriend and I moved out together, and there have been many things to adapt to. No more coming home to food that’s already made, the chores are split between us, and all of the finances are our responsibility.
If I didn’t feel ready or prepared, I wouldn’t have done it. We have to take a chance on ourselves, and this is a major stepping stone to maturity.
The Move-in Process Takes a While
You can move all your belongings from point A to point B, but it doesn’t stop there.
Nearly every day, my girlfriend and I have come up with something new that we need to buy, such as extra drawers, a coat hanger rack, a shoe rack, cooking supplies, and so much more.
Unpacking all your belongings takes work, especially if you’re splitting the space. Everything is a work in progress for quite some time. School, work, and everything else in-between doesn’t stop just because you’re moved out.
It can be tough to balance several things at once, but it isn’t impossible.
You Have to be Self-Sufficient
Having your own place requires you to be self-sufficient and rely solely on yourself. Asking for help is fine, but what’s the point of moving out if you constantly go back home for help or supplies.
To truly have independence and take care of yourself, you have to be the adult who takes responsibility and sacrifices other things.
Before moving out, I had extra money for investing, ordering out, and other things, but now that’s changed a bit. The bills aren’t overwhelming, but the leftover leisure money is definitely cut quite a bit.
After the first week of being moved out, I feel like my girlfriend and I have a pretty good understanding of what needs to get done, what we need to buy, and how to maintain a quality apartment.
Final Thought
If it weren’t for my girlfriend, I wouldn’t have been as prepared as we were in this move-out. Creating a spreadsheet and doing most of the shopping before our move-in date saved a thousand headaches.
If you work from home, I would highly advise you to have your furniture, internet, and food situation ready to go as soon as possible.
Owning my first apartment is a huge step into adulthood, and I can’t wait to see how many life lessons and experiences I gain from it.
