Broward County, FL
The annual Reading Pays More (RPM) Father's Day challenge called for fathers and father figures to record a video or take a picture reading with a child/children before or on Father's Day and post it on their social media using the hashtags #lovereadingwithdad and #readforfloyd. Images were also posted on the Reading Pays More Facebook and Instagram Page.
"We want to spread the word that reading together is not only fundamental, but it also helps create a strong parental bond," said RPM Founder Georgia Robinson. And it is especially important for parents to read with their young boys," she added.
The yearly Father’s Day Challenge honors the memory of George Floyd, encourages the bond between Fathers and Father Figures with children and nurtures a love of reading. Robinson said the aim is also to help overcome the “Coronavirus learning slide.” The “coronavirus-learning slide” is akin to the “summer slide” which represents the learning deficit in reading skills that children usually experience during the summer months.
RPM is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that markets the financial and other benefits of reading. Their mission is to help nurture a culture of reading so that every child is reading and comprehending above AGE- level.
Georgia Robinson serves her community as a reading ambassador. She has a passion for education but found that the fundamental skill of reading and comprehension, above all, was being neglected. Georgia also speaks on the topics of student motivation and entrepreneurship.
Georgia works in one of the lowest income communities in Broward County, Florida, and sees first hand how low reading skills negatively affect the residents. RPM is part of Georgia’s vision to foster a culture of reading in every community and ensure that every child is reading and comprehending above grade-level regardless of the status of her or his biological parents. She believes that through RPM children will not only build a better future for themselves but will become caring, kind, compassionate, confident and self-sufficient adults who will continue to share their knowledge and love of words by paying it forward.
READ MORE! KNOW MORE! LOVE MORE! EARN MORE!
RPM as its mission highlights the importance of parents reading with their children via various literary events and an ongoing social media campaign called #lovereadingwithdad. The group encourages dads, granddads and uncles of all ages to share a picture of themselves reading a book with a child using the hashtag #lovereadingwithdad.
