On June 18, 2021, while sailing in the Atlantic Ocean, the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. The first scheduled explosive event of Full Ship Shock Trials was completed by Ford (CVN 78). According to photographs supplied by the Navy and government seismic monitors, the Navy exploded its newest carrier with hundreds of pounds of explosives in the Atlantic Ocean on Friday to simulate how the ship would behave in battle scenarios.

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), which was equipped with sensors to monitor the effects of the bomb, was hit by the blast about 100 miles off the Florida coast just before 4 p.m. Friday, according to the US Geological Survey, which measured the blast's strength using the richter scale (3.9) magnitude earthquake , thus calling the event experimental explosion. The US Navy uses live explosives to conduct shock tests on new ship designs to ensure that US warships can continue to meet stringent mission requirements under the harsh conditions they may encounter in battle.

The shock trial testing is being carried out by the Navy in compliance with Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Instruction 9072.2 and the National Defense Authorization Act of 2016.

Ford's shock tests are taking place off the coast of the United States, following a tight schedule that conforms with environmental mitigation regulations and takes into account known marine species movement patterns in the test area. Throughout FSST, the Navy has used comprehensive protocols to protect the safety of military and civilian workers involved in the testing process.

The US Navy's Ford aircraft carrier is the newest and most modern in its fleet. In April, the ship completed an 18-month Post-Delivery Test & Trials period in which the crew completed all needed testing, completed scheduled enhancements and maintenance ahead of schedule, and acquired critical lessons to improve the reliability of Ford-Class systems. At the same time, the ship was the only platform on the east coast for carrier certification.
