A man has been arrested in Oakland on suspicion of attacking Gov. Gavin Newsom while he was visiting downtown Oakland, as the authorities have revealed on Friday.
What are the details?
The governor was just walking to a pizzeria and barbershop located in Old Oakland to support small businesses when an “aggressive individual” suddenly approached him, as Fox News reports.
Fran Clader, director of communications for the California Highway Patrol, which takes care of security for the governor, let the word out about the disturbing incident.
The security officers acted swiftly and removed Newsom from danger. The 54-year-old man who has apparently threatened the governor was taken into custody.
The East Bay Times reported that the governor did not appear to be injured and he even joked a bit with reporters saying different people have different ways of saying hello.
The suspect was taken to Alameda County jail. He is currently under investigation for resisting an executive officer and also for assaulting a public official.
A woman who was identified as the man’s sister was reached by phone for more details on the incident. She said the suspect had severe mental health problems and that he had been homeless for quite some time.
According to the sister, the allegations made related to the assault were “consistent with his past behavior.”
The investigation about the Oakland assault continues, with a motive yet to be found for what took place. Anyone with relevant information about the suspect is encouraged to get in touch with the authorities.
