BURNSVILLE, MN — The International Festival of Burnsville was first established in 2006 to celebrate the city’s cultural diversity.
Pre COVID-19, the festival used to take place at Nicollet Commons Park every summer, featuring a wide range of music and dance groups that represented cultures around the world. Guests and families would also enjoy food, appreciate cultural displays and engage in kid-friendly activities.
As summer 2021 is still in the middle of the pandemic, the committee decided to shift most of the festival into a virtual experience. The festival will be celebrated through a hybrid model, offering both virtual and in-person experiences. A variety of art and cultural experiences will be available for families to enjoy together.
Here are the available Craft Culture activities:
- Kids aged 10 and under and their families can create Czech finger puppets on Saturday, July 31, 2021.
This class is free, but pre-registration is requested and craft kits will be provided. The class will also have of music and dance performances for kids to enjoy, dance and sing along. These performances are selected from the International Festival from the previous years.
- Kids of age 10 to 18 can create woven Guatemalan bracelet on July 24, 2021.
Pre-registration for the event is requested and craft kits will be provided. Music and dance performances will also be showcased, selected from the previous years. The selection aims for children to explore various global musical traditions. This activity is free of charge.
- Adults can also enjoy Craft Culture on July 30, 2021. This activity will focus on creating custom Scandinavian stenciled napkins. It is free, but pre-registration is required and craft kits will be provided. Best music and dance performances from the previous years have been selected especially for adults to expand their musical repertoire.
The festival is made possible in part of grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council.
