ATLANTA, GA — The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) will hold another Fresh MARTA Market. This is a farm stand that takes place in five MARTA stations located in Bankhead, West End, Five Points, College Park, and H.E. Holmes. These stations serve many areas with limited food access.
Every stand will operate one day per week providing fresh produce to MARTA customers starting from Tuesday to Friday at a different station every day. The MARTA market aims to help get healthy and fresh food into places where people already are.
MARTA partners up with the Community Farmers Markets, Atlanta Community Food Bank, and Open Hand and Wholesome Wave Georgia for this innovative food access solution. Products at the MARTA market are obtained from the farmers affiliated with Community Farmers Markets and a number of local food hubs.
Through this event, local farmers can sell more products to consumers that might not otherwise make it to a farmers market. Fresh MARTA Market patrons can do a big amount of their fresh food shopping on their way to or from home, for non-local produce is also available.
In this market, people can pay for the products using cash, credit, and debit, as well as EBT/SNAP. SNAP is doubled at the market which means that $5 swiped is worth $10 to spend.
Meanwhile, due to COVID-19, people have to maintain a 6 feet distance from each other, wear a mask and use gloves when selecting produce. All surfaces are disinfected and sanitized frequently. And all MART staff are required to wear a mask and gloves at all times.
