Anaheim, California
Jason Becher, 46, from Anaheim, California, strangled and beat his ex-girlfriend and ridiculed the quality of the alarm system she had installed just hours before.
The Superior Court of Orange County, California, sentenced him to life in prison without parole on Friday.
The judge said he hadn’t shown an ounce of remorse for the murder. In fact, he was, reportedly, laughing.
In this case, lying in wait was an added element of the conviction.
Marylou Sarkissian, 50, was the victim of Becher's domestic violence and he accused her of being unfaithful and stealing his money.
Becker's lawyer admitted that he killed Sarkissian at her Huntington Beach, California home when she simply opened the door to let out her dog.
Becher's public defender argued the killing was impulsive and shouldn't be prosecuted as second-degree murder or voluntary manslaughter, as it was not planned but the result of rage.
Sarkissian was accused of stealing money from Becher's all-cash marijuana business, the defense argued.
Becher beat and choked Sarkissian repeatedly in violation of a restraining order and left a series of threatening voicemails.
Sarkissian installed a security system just hours before she was killed.
He was seen cursing and mocking the security system in video footage shown at his trial.
