(WESTPORT, Conn.) Police launched a homicide investigation after a mother and her 7-year-old daughter were found dead inside a Westport home Thursday afternoon.

According to ABC 7, authorities responded to the scene around 4 p.m. after being notified of an unresponsive woman in a home on Lyndale Park near the Merritt Parkway.

Officers searched the inside of the house to see if anyone else was present when they found the child’s body.

Police are investigating the incident as a double homicide and have not yet released the victims’ causes of death or identities.

Officers continued to inspect the two-story home on Friday.

A local elementary school is offering emotional support and counseling to parents and students if they are interested. Patch reported that Coleytown Elementary School and Stepping Stones Preschool will be closed on Friday.

Westport Schools Superintendent Thomas Scarice said the deaths of the district parent and child were an "untimely and tragic loss,” according to ABC 7.

"There are no words that could console the sense of sorrow we feel by this unspeakable tragedy," Scarice said in a statement. "We want to express our deepest condolences to all those impacted by this heartbreaking loss."

The homicide investigation is still ongoing. Police said the incident seems to be an isolated one and don’t believe there is an active threat to the community.
