Juneteenth is a day for recognizing the emancipation of African Americans. It commerates June 19, 1865 which was the dat that enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas were told they were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation that was issued by President Abraham Lincoln more than two and a half years earlier on January 1, 1863. Also known as "Freedom Day" or "Emancipation Day:, Juneteenth celebrations including parades and festivals take place across the country.
If you live in Atlanta, Georgia, there are many ways you can celebrate Juneteenth this year. Read on to learn all about it.

2.) Attend the Juneteenth Black Excellence Family Festival in Douglasville
Any opportunity to celebrate Black Excellence is always welcome. This year, the Black Excellence Family Festival is a small business expo where there will be exhibitions from small business vendors. What better way to buy and support Black businesses and ensure their businesses thrive and wealth is distributed accordingly. According to Brookings Edu, At $171,000, the net worth of a typical white family is nearly ten times greater than that of a Black family ($17,150) in 2016. If you can, spending your dollars on Black owned businesses will certainly help close the White - Black wealth gap. A good first step is showing up for the Black Excellence Family Festival and shopping Black owned items. There will be entertainment, food vendors, giveaways and even scholarship awards to help the Black community.

3.) Visit a Black-owned Atlanta restaurant offering Juneteenth specials

The vegan and vegerarian food truck park is hosting a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday June 19 from 3pm to 10pm. There will be lots of vegan and vegetarian meals to choose from and you can have a good food experience through the Food Trucks on display. There will also be live music and pop-up retail shops. Go hungry and ready to stuff your face with some delicious food.

5.) Join the Historic Sweet Auburn Juneteenth Celebration and Coloring Book Launch
On June 19, Atlanta Breakfast Club on Auburn Avenue is hosting a coloring book launch in collaboration with Remerge and Color ATL. This is a great way to attend a book launch while having food and enjoying a Juneteenth parade. Kicks off on June 19 from 10am to 3pm. More information on this can be found here.
