Police said an East Bay mother was intoxicated when she crashed a car in the median of a San Bruno street, injuring her two young children in the vehicle last week.

After she was arrested, police said, the suspect then spit at, kicked, and bit the police officers.

“On Wednesday, June 9th, 2021, at 7:57 p.m., San Bruno Police Officers happened upon a vehicle collision that had just occurred in the area of Sneath Lane and National Ave. in San Bruno,” police said in a written statement. “There were two children in the vehicle, both of whom were suffering from moderate visible injuries. The driver and mother of the two children, a 25-year-old Hayward resident, was evaluated by Officers and determined to have been driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision.”

Police immediately called for ambulances to tend to the injured victims.

“Further investigation revealed that the two children in the vehicle had not been properly secured in appropriate child passenger restraint systems during the collision,” police continued. “The children were both transported by ambulance to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.”

Officers detained the suspect, and that’s when the incident took another violent turn, according to authorities.

“During the DUI investigation, the driver became combative and assaulted officers by spitting, kicking, and biting at them,” police stated. “The driver was arrested and booked into the San Mateo County Jail for charges related to driving under the influence causing bodily injury, child endangerment, and resisting officers with violence.”

Speeding, impaired, and distracted driving have all increased in recent years throughout the Bay Area. On Thursday, June 17, San Bruno Police conducted a traffic enforcement operation with neighboring agencies to catch drivers who were breaking traffic laws.

"SBPD officers assisted South San Francisco Police Department with an unsafe speed traffic enforcement detail, paid for by the California Office of Traffic Safety," police said of the operation. “Combined, the team of officers wrote over 40 citations for unsafe speed violations: many of which included drivers going over 60MPH on city streets! Please slow down and allow for extra time to get to your destinations as traffic increases this summer, you may avoid a collision or save a life!”

On May 28, San Bruno Police conducted a DUI checkpoint at San Bruno Ave. East and 7th Ave looking for impaired motorists during the Memorial Day weekend.

One person was arrested on suspicion of DUI, according to officers.

"Seven drivers were cited for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended or revoked license and 600 vehicles were contacted,” police said of the May 28 operation. “Checkpoint locations are based on a history of crashes and DUI arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired. The San Bruno Police Department is committed to keeping the public safe when they are traveling.”

Police said the checkpoints are paid for by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
