(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) Scottsdale Airport is set to close for roughly 45 days as crews work on its only runway, the city said Wednesday.

City officials said crews will start working on July 6, and all airport operations will be put on hold aside from helicopters using the apron area.

"Since its original construction, the runway has not undergone any major rehabilitation," the city said in a press release. "The city has maximized the useful life of the existing runway, but it’s now time. The runway is in critical need of rehabilitation to ensure the infrastructure is maintained in excellent condition to best serve the based and visiting aircraft customers flying single and multi-engine piston, turboprop, and business jets."

The closure is expected to last until mid-September.

The city said the runway hasn't undergone major rehab since it was built in 1967. The runway was extended to a length of roughly 8,250 feet in 1982 and widened to 100 feet in 2000.

City officials said the $12 million project won't adjust the size of the runway.

“It’s essential for the airport to provide a well maintained, safe and secure infrastructure to accommodate our aircraft operators,” Gary P. Mascaro, Scottsdale Airport aviation director, said in the release.

The project will mostly be paid for with an $11 million Federal Aviation Administration grant. The Arizona Department of Transportation and the city will pay for the rest.
