Bystander injured during East Oakland gun battle

(OAKLAND, Calif.) A reported gunfight involving several shooters left a 51-year-old taxi driver injured after he was hit by a stray bullet early Wednesday morning, East Bay Times reports.

His condition has been listed as stable. There was one passenger in the car who was uninjured during the shooting.

The incident happened in the 1600 block of 99th Ave. at approximately 12:09 a.m. in a residential neighborhood.

Police say the victim reported seeing several people engaged in a gunfight near his passenger’s destination before he was hit by a stray bullet.

The name of the taxi company he works for has not been disclosed.

Investigators recovered over 50 shell casings at the scene and found that at least one house was struck by gunfire. The motive for the shooting is currently unknown.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for any additional information leading to the arrest of the shooters.
