ATLANTA, GA — Superintendent Trent North of the Douglas County School System has announced several new appointments to the district’s leadership.

Dr. Kacia Thompson will assume the role of Director of Extended Learning. Dr. Thompson’s new role will include oversight of all learning initiatives outside of regular school hours, such as after-school programs and summer school. In addition, she will work to develop the curriculum and assess the performance of all extended programs in terms of student learning and accomplishment.

Dr. Thompson has been a DCSS educator since 2005, serving in Douglas County. She was most recently the district’s 504 and multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) program coordinator and the principal of two Douglas County schools, Burnett Elementary and Dorsett Shoals Elementary.

Mitch Springer is the next Area Executive Director for the Douglas County School System, where he will be in charge of 12 campuses. Mr. Springer has worked in both Carroll County and Carrollton City Schools as an administrator. He is currently the principal of Villa Rica Middle School. Mr. Springer plans to complete his Ed.D. in middle school history in 2022.

Shelly Hester, the current principal of Dorsett Shoals Elementary, has accepted the position of Douglas County School System Area Executive Director. She will be in charge of 12 schools. Ms. Hester has worked in school administration in Douglas and Carroll Counties. In 1995, she began working as a teacher in Douglas County.

Dorsett Shoals Elementary will have a new principal, Kelly Brown. Ms. Brown started her teaching career in Clayton County and has been in Douglas County since 2006, most recently as an assistant principal at Bill Arp Elementary. Ms. Brown has a master’s degree from the University of West Georgia and a master’s degree in education from Mercer University.

“I expect all of these individuals who are beginning new roles to take the Douglas County School System to a higher level,” Superintendent North commented. “They are all experienced and have a proven track record of success. I look forward to seeing all they accomplish in the years to come.”
