(THE BRONX, N.Y.) Local officials will announce Wednesday that 16 parks will be renamed across New York City in an effort to honor the Black American experience in NYC. The renaming process kicked off in the Bronx at what is currently known as Mullaly Park, according to ABC 7 NY.
NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver will team with New York State Democratic Sen. Jose Serrano, New York State Assembly Member Amanda Septimo, New York City Council Member Vanessa Gibson and former City Council Member and daughter of the late Rev. Wendell Foster, Helen Dianne Foster, to make the announcement.
The renamed parks will honor teachers, civil rights leaders, LGBTQ+ activists, entertainers, writers, abolitionists and more, per ABC 7.
Last summer, Bronxites pushed for the renaming of the 15-acre Mullaly Park in the Highbridge section of the borough. The park's name stems from John Mullaly, known as the "Father of Bronx Parks," but who was also known for his racist outlook.
As part of a commitment made last November, officials are holding the event to premiere the new name of Mullaly Park and Recreation Center.
Last June, NYC Parks looked to showcase its support of the Black community in fighting systemic racism.
As a result, the agency has renamed 28 parks in honor of the Black experience, including the Bronx's Tremont Park, which is now Walter Gladwin Park and Heritage Field in Macombs Dam Park, which is now Elston Gene Howard Field.
