Sometimes you need to indulge in some Italian food. It is comforting to start the meal by dipping a slice of bread into oil and digging into a big bowl of pasta or polenta. Delaware has a variety of Italian restaurants to keep your stomach full and your mouth watering. Here are five of my favorites.

1. Soffritto Italian Grill, Newark, Delaware

There's more to Italian cuisine than a bowl of pasta, and Soffritto does it right. In addition to being ranked the best Italian restaurant in the world by Ospitalita Italiana (outside of Italy), this restaurant is also unique because it is a family-owned business. Whether you're going out for a date or to celebrate an important event, you will not feel out of place in jeans.

Soffritto Italian Grill is an authentic family-owned Italian restaurant located at 1130 Capitol Trail in Newark, DE. Since opening our doors in 2005, Soffritto's wealth of experience and exquisite dishes have brought us great recognition and acclaim locally as well as internationally.

To fully enjoy their experience at Soffritto Italian Grill, guests dine in a beautiful, relaxing atmosphere that creates an ambiance of a home away from home. Our Tuscan stone and stucco exterior, along with a cozy wood-burning fireplace, welcome guests into the restaurant. Murmurs from the interior waterfall and authentic Italian music accompany the delicious aromas of our award-winning Italian cuisine to provide a sense of comfort during each guests' stay.

2. Capers and Lemons, Wilmington, Delaware

Capers and Lemons in Wilmington serves up gnocchi and spaghetti. Best of Delaware awarded them the title of best fresh pasta for 2015. As this is a restaurant and market, you can also take home some treats after your meal!

3. Taverna, Newark, Delaware

In 2015, Best of Delaware ranked the Taverna as the Best Restaurant in Newark. The homemade veal meatballs are my favorite on the lunch menu and are served in a small portion as an appetizer. Pizzas are outstanding, but the main courses stand out. Desserts are a great way to end a meal - the honey-orange syrup and fried dough are shareable sweet treats.

With the opening of Taverna, Platinum Dining Group brings to life its highly anticipated version of the "neighborhood gathering place." Inspired by traditional Italian watering holes and the hearty kitchens of Italian homes, Taverna offers a rural take on fine Italian cuisine.

4. Touch of Italy (multiple locations), Delaware

The atmosphere at Touch of Italy is casual, with seating among the meat and prepared food counters. Grab a meatball or eggplant parm sandwich for lunch, or try one of their outstanding pasta dishes. Everything is top-notch here, including the pastries and cookies!

5. Frank & Louie's Italian Specialties, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Frank & Louie's had to make a list more of a deli than an authentic Italian restaurant because the food will blow your mind! Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will appreciate their "Tiny Dancer," which is their mozzarella, tomato, and basil hero. Mangia!
