After the last year we are dreaming of an island getaway! We think laying on the beach with a fruity cocktail in your hand can be the ultimate escape. With that in mind, occasionally we try to find a little piece of island life right here in Chicago-land.

Tiki bars are not usually something that comes to mind when you are thinking about grabbing some drinks in Chicago. Irish pubs, sports bars, and cocktail lounges can be found on every corner in this great city and we love it! But if you want to trade in the city norm for a little island flare these spots might just help you feel like you’re on island time.

Hala Kahiki Lounge

This River Grove spot is one of the oldest tiki bars in the country. Its long, rich history makes this spot even more special. What was originally known as “The Lucky Start”, founded by the Sacharski family in the 1950’s, grew into the Hla Kahiki Lounge we know today. This simple tavern added a few bamboo trimmings, bought at sears, and soon became referred to as the “Bamboo Rendezvous.”

Over time the family leaned into the theme, moved the location to River Grove and rebranded as the Hala Kahiki lounge. This retro tiki bar is still owned by the Sacharski family today and has gained national notoriety. They serve up a large menu of island themed drinks as well as serving the classics such as the zombie and the mai tai. They have a limited food menu, but if you are hungry you can head around the block for hot dogs at the iconic Gene and Jude's.

Hala Kahiki Lounge is located at 2834 River Road in River Grove, IL

Food and fun, that is what we love. And we love to find both of those things in our home city of Chicago, the Midwest, and beyond!
