(PORTLAND, Ore.) A new survey conducted by DHM Research, on behalf of the Western States Center, shows 4 in 10 Oregonians position themselves with white supremacist ideology, KATU reports.

Oregonians who participated in the survey answered questions about American heritage and democracy. Of those surveyed, 40% agreed that white European heritage needs to be preserved.

“I think probably what was most disturbing was that almost 4 in 10 Oregonians strongly or somewhat agree with statements that align with core arguments of white nationalism and other far-right groups,” said Amy Herzfeld Copple, of Western States Center. “There was a slight increase for Oregonians in support of bigoted social movements.”

Despite this, the survey also revealed that the majority of Oregonians disagree with white supremacist ideology and believe it’s important to protect Oregon’s multicultural makeup.
