(AUSTIN, Texas) After a mass shooting on Saturday at Sixth Street that left one dead and 13 injured, state rep. Vikki Goodwin wrote a letter to Gov. Abbott to veto the permitless carry bill.

House Bill 1927 would allow Texans to carry a handgun without a license or formal training. Currently, Texas law says gun owners must have a license, complete training, submit fingerprints and pass a written and shooting test, according to KVUE.

Abbott has said he will sign the bill into law.

"We cannot ignore the pattern of gun violence that we have seen again and again..." Goodwin wrote in the letter.

“While I realize that laws cannot singlehandedly keep guns out of the wrong hands, I also understand that they impose boundaries, create order and set a tone,” she wrote. “We need you, as our governor, to send the message that we are addressing mass gun violence in Texas. That message is not sent by undoing our system of licensing and the requirement that those who carry a gun obtain training in relevant laws and safety procedures.”

Abbott also promised to make Texas a sanctuary state for guns in April.

A poll done by The University of Texas and Texas Tribune shows a majority of Texas voters do not support the bill.
