CLEVELAND, OH — Westlake High School’s TechMates Club and the Architectural Design Team were featured in the Ohio Technology and Engineering Educators Association News on May 26, 2021.

The TechMates Club was featured because it was their first appearance at Crocker Park on Saturday, May 22, 2021. The Young Entrepreneurs Marker sponsored the TechMates Club’s tent and table stationed alongside the popular North Union Farmers Market.

Students John Mudryk, Shane Burich and Drew Mather; juniors Neige DeAngelis, Sia Bavishi, Taki Psaropoulos, Mantas Viazmitinas, Ethan Waring, Tanner Amy; and freshman Helen Willmer worked in the tent. They sold their creations from 9:00 AM – 1:00 PM. The TechMates Club sold 3D printed “W” cookie-cutter, Demon Keychains, “W” smartphone holders, Demon Nation Gamer Glasses, S superpower of STEM Demon rings, Cricut vinyl cut “W” coffee mugs, Demon tailgate chairs, banners, many types of stickers, and lasered Demon cork coasters.

The Young Entrepreneur Market provides these students a real experience in selling and they were able to gain skills and knowledge about product development, customer interaction, pricing, and pitching.

Meanwhile, the Architectural Design Team was featured because they won 3rd place in an International Competition for the 52nd Annual Architectural Foundation of San Francisco (AFSF) high school design competition. The competition was sponsored by Forge Development Partners.

The Westlake High School team consisting of Mickey Hamila (Sr.), Mantas Viazmitinas (Jr.) and JP Mogyordy (Jr.). They won the $100 cash prize. The challenge was to design a public waterfront “playground” at south beach piers 38-40 along San Francisco’s Embarcadero.

Those students used their knowledge of architectural design, engineering, construction, green building and design process to create site plan, elevation drawings, floor plans, section views, renderings, models, a design narrative and video to convey their design intent.

Industrial professionals, professors from the college of architecture at Stanford University, the dean of architecture at the California College of the Arts and other member architects from the Architectural Foundation of San Francisco evaluated the students' design. These students place 3rd place of 140 other entries.
