Churches are an enjoyable place to visit on Sundays, whether you are religious or not. Besides attending Mass on a Sunday, a visit to a historical church offers the opportunity to witness culture, tradition, history, and religion.

Some of the oldest buildings in Los Angeles are churches, and they not only offer a glimpse of the past but offer architectural wonders and relics to take your breath away.

St. Johns Cathedral

St. John's Episcopal Cathedral, built in the 1920s in Romanesque Revival architectural style, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as well as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.

The historic building is one of the most beautiful in Los Angeles. The structure of the majestic cathedral is concrete with high wooden beam ceilings. Stained glass windows, mosaics, and icons adorn the church, along with the Italian marble altar. Besides the stunning exterior and interior, make sure you take a look at the Great Organ of St. John's Cathedral, which was built in 1924. It consists of 56 ranks, 46 stops, and 3,450 pipes. Take a sneak peek of the historic building on their website gallery.

"We visited early morning, and it looked marvelous in the glow of the sunrise. It has grand stone craft and an impressive belfry." - Permia, Ireland, Tripadvisor, December 2019.

St. John's Episcopal Cathedral offers a cross-cultural, inclusive community that should be visited by visitors or residents alike, especially if you love historic architecture.

They offer a regular Sunday mass at 9 am. A simple, traditional service is followed by a coffee hour.

The Choir of St. John's Cathedral, which was formed after the founding of St. John's Church, in 1890 presents a diverse range of world-class liturgical music, including some of the earliest known medieval music. They are known to often collaborate with members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Inner-City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles.

"From the plainsong chanting by the clergy to the singing of the Mass and motets by the choir, hymns sung by the congregation, or voluntaries played on the grand organ, our music aims to celebrate the richness of our shared Anglican tradition." - St. John's Cathedral.

Additionally, there is a Compline at the Cathedral every 2nd Sunday of each month. A 30-minute service of candlelight, stillness, prayer, & song is followed by food and fellowship. The next one is this Sunday, June 13th, at 7 pm.

Please note vaccinated people are welcome to attend indoor worship, and face masks are required.

Anyone who can't make the Sunday service can watch it live on Facebook Live. Also, check out St John's cathedral's YouTube channel for live streaming of services.

"St John's Cathedral is beautiful architecturally and spiritually, embodying a central concept of Episcopal worship. It's worth a visit for either the aesthetic tour or a service." - Edgar Cosset, Brooklyn, Tripadvisor, March 2018.
