Family of slain Burlington man Reynaldo 'Rey' Villarreal to host candlelit vigil for those impacted by gun violence
The family of a slain Burlington man will host a candlelit vigil for those impacted by gun violence at 3 p.m. Saturday by the large shelter in Crapo Park. "My brother's trial is getting ready to start, and the gun violence has really affected my family in a big way," said Marisol Santos, whose brother, Reynaldo "Rey" Villarreal, was shot to death Sept. 8, 2019, at the age of 28. Civic Music announced 2021-22 lineup, tickets now available
After a year of change and uncertainty, Burlington Civic Music Association will open its 2021-22 season in September. Sept. 15: A New World Record: A Tribute to the Music of Electric Light Orchestra. The tribute features brilliant arrangements, flawless musicianship and transcendent vocals performed by A New World Record. ELO made its mark in the ‘70s with a passion to combine Beatlesque psychedelic rock with classical music. The result: millions of records sold and a recent Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame induction. A New World Record expertly recreates ELO’s many megahits, including “Telephone Line,” Living Thing,” Sweet Talkin’ Woman” and “Mr. Blue Sky.” Read more
Off-duty bartender helps to extinguish business blaze
The quick actions of an off-duty bartender aided in the containment of a fire that broke out Wednesday in the stairwell of a downtown business. The Burlington Fire Department was called to 702 Jefferson St. at 8:53 a.m. to find smoke emanating from the stairwell leading to the second story of the building. Firefighters also found Roy Roxlou, a customer of Farney's who occasionally tends bar there, working to extinguish the blaze. Read more
