HOUSTON — The Fort Bend County Libraries are holding a special reading challenge for this summer to stimulate reading habits for children and adults alike.

The event begins on Monday, May 31, through August 31, 2021. There are three programs each for the age group of children, teens, and adults.

This program is entirely free and is open to everyone regardless of the county of residence. Prospective participants may register online by visiting the FBCL website and clicking the “SRC Sign-Up” icon or by downloading the Beanstack Tracker application on participants’ mobile devices.

The younger children program is called the “Youth Summer Reading Challenge”. This program encourages children to read or listen to as many books as they can.

Children will earn rewards based on the total number of books they have read. The library will give a bookmark for the first five books they read, followed by a certificate for 10 books, a color-changing cup or ruler for 15 books, and a reading trophy for the first 20 books they read.

The 20 books read will also be marked with their name written on a picture of a whale or a dragon and a raffle for gift cards donated by the Friends of the Library organizations. The winner for each library location will be announced on September 1.

Readers in 6th to 8th grade can participate in the “Middle School Summer Challenge”. The participants who have read for 600 minutes or 10 hours will receive a color-changing cup.

Youths who have read 1,200 minutes or 20 hours will receive their choice of a reading trophy or a mystery prize. The 20 hours milestone will be followed by a drawing of a $25 gift card, supported by the Friends of the Library that will be awarded to a lucky participant at each branch library, announced on September 1.

The last age group is “YA/Adult Summer Reading Challenge”, which includes young adults in high school and adults of all ages. All readers in this category who have completed the goal of reading 1,000 minutes will earn a limited sports drawstring backpack and will be included in a $25 gift card raffle.

The card will be awarded to one lucky reader at each branch library. There is also an ultimate grand prize drawing for those who completed the challenge on August 27.

Families can also pick up to-go activity packets of fun crafts for the month from the library. For inquiries, call the library system’s Communications Office (281-633-4734).
