It’s time to tell Alexa to play “Mask Off.” (If you are a vaccinated citizen of Columbus, Ohio, that is.)

Columbus, Ohio Mayor Andrew Ginther has decided to repeal the mask mandate that was issued last July. The city’s new mask mandate aligns with that of the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Ohio Department of Health, and local health officails’ guidance. According to reports, approximately half of Franklin County residents have received the COVID-19 vaccine, and Ginther cites the city’s vaccination rate as a reason for lifing the mask mandate. “I think it really makes sense,” said Ginther. “This is the right time to do this.”

The outbreak of COVID-19 eventually led to the enforcement of mask-wearing across the country. Many Columbus business owners weren’t happy with this mandate, but now they’ll be able to dictate whether or not they still require masks inside of their establishments.

Columbus Health Commissioner Dr. Mysheika Roberts stressed that just because masks are no longer required by law, doesn’t mean that COVID-19 is completely in the past. “The pandamic is not over. If you are not vaccinated, please do so as soon as possible - and continue to wear a facial covering until you are fully vaccinated to protect yourself and others,” she said.

Public officials are making sure that the citizens of Columbus don’t take the lifting of the mask mandate as permission to throw all caution to the wind. Mask-wearing is still encouraged for people who haven’t been vaccinated, and social distancing is still advised when participating in large group activities.

Dr. Roberts’ statement was echoed by Councilmember Priscilla Tyson.

"Although we are lifting the face-covering mandate, it is vital that people continue to take precautions to remain safe and healthy. The repeal is not a declaration of victory over COVID-19. There is still much work to be done," said Councilmember Priscilla Tyson.
