Natchez is known for its beautiful, historic, and antebellum homes. There are several homes in the area that date back to the Civil War and slavery times. One of these homes on the list of mansions to see in Natchez is the Rosalie Mansion.

The Rosalie Mansion is located on the corner of Canal and Orleans Street in Natchez. It has been reported that the mansion contains some of the most beautiful and original furnishings that belonged to its owners from the 1800s.

Background

The Rosalie Mansion was first built in 1823. The Rosalie Mansion is named after Fort Rosalie which was occupied by the French and is the location of the Natchez Indians' 1729 massacre of the French colonists. The mansion was built in the Greek Revival style by Peter Little, a wealthy cotton broker.

In 1863, the mansion was taken over by the Union Army and used as their headquarters. The army kept the original owner's furnishings in the attic. The furnishings were guarded to prevent theft and destruction.

Today, the mansion has been converted to a historic house museum and it is owned and operated by the Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution. It is also a National Historic Landmark.

Tour of the mansion

Daily tours of the house are provided year-round for all ages starting from 9 am to 4 pm. Ticket prices are $20 for adults and $15 for teens. Children age 11 and under can tour the home for free provided they are accompanied by an adult. Very young children may not enjoy the home as much because the furnishings inside the house are very delicate and cannot be touched. No photography is allowed inside. The good news is that masks are no longer required due to the improved COVID-19 situation.

Reviews on the Tripadvisor website have rated the mansion as 4.5 stars out of 5. It is listed in the top 10 list of things to do in Natchez.

When you visit the mansion, you will see that it is located on a bluff that overlooks the Mississippi River. There is a parking area behind the house. The location itself is very beautiful with gardens showcasing the exterior of the house.

The house has some of the most beautiful interiors of all the historic antebellum homes in the area. Most of the original furnishings remain including children's clothing and toys that belonged to the original owners. Visitors to the mansion have described it as well-maintained and very little restoration work has been required despite the age of the home.

There will be guides to provide the tours of the home and overall it is well worth your time to take a tour of the mansion. Don't forget the gift shop.
