HOUSTON — The Governor’s Emergency Educational Relief (GEER) Fund funded the Finish Line Grant at San Jacinto College, also known as the Texas Reskilling Grant. This fund is intended for students who have previously stopped out of any undergraduate institution and displaced Texas workers who want to reskill and re-enter the workforce.
One of the students who received the grant is Corina Rios, a new mom and returning student. She felt relieved when she learned she was eligible for the Finish Line Grant.
“I did not qualify for many other grants, so I was very grateful knowing that I could start my program without having to pay so much out of pocket,” said Rios.
Rios previously attended another institution after graduating from high school, but she soon realized it was not a good fit. Rios was ready for a change after putting off his educational plans for many years and working in jobs that did not feel like a career.
“Now that I have a 10-month-old daughter, I want to be able to provide for her and have more stability. I found the [Finish Line] flyer on the San Jacinto College website, so I contacted the program for more information and to see if I was eligible,” added Rios.
After receiving the Finish Line Grant, Rios can return to San Jac to begin the medical billing and coding program in the summer of 2021.
The Finish Line Grant covers tuition for up to three semesters ($2,500 max) and includes 11 credit and two non-credit programs. For more information on the grant, visit sanjac.edu/finish-line or call 281-991-2680.
