CLEVELAND — University Hospitals in Cleveland is one of Ohio’s major economic drivers, according to a recent study. A new economic impact report shows that it supports the economy of the state of Ohio to a significant degree. UH’s system of medical and health centers and physician offices has generated approximately 67,000 direct and indirect jobs, which in turn supports nearly 45,000 households.
The system has contributed more than $10 billion to the regional economy and nearly $4.5 billion of labor income to Ohio. In 2019 alone, it employed 27,775 workers. The system’s joint venture partners also hired an additional 2,979 individuals, making the UH responsible for 30,734 employments that year. The report, which covers the calendar year of 2019, is authored by Silverlode Consulting.
Additionally, the construction of UH’s facilities has supported an estimate of 790 jobs, for a total of 31,524 total permanent and construction jobs in 2019. These direct jobs sustained an additional 35,163 indirect jobs, resulting in a total of 66,687 Ohio jobs supported by the system. For every direct UH job, approximately 1.12 additional jobs are supported in Ohio.
