ATLANTA — The Atlanta BeltLine Partnership, Atlanta Legal Aid Society, and Grove Park Foundation are partnering to help guide property owners in BeltLine neighborhoods to understand and appeal their property tax assessment.

For property owners, a tax assessment is crucial as it determines the value of a piece of real estate. A government-assigned assessor uses the assessed value of a property to calculate the amount of tax due on it.

Taxes on property vary by county and state and are commonly paid annually. Several other factors also determine the amount of tax that the owners have to pay, such as the property’s assessed value, the value of other properties in the area, and the local government’s budget needs.

The Fulton County property owners are scheduled to mail in their tax assessments for 2021 sometime this month. The mailing date will trigger a 45-day window when property owners can appeal their assessments.

Owners must file the appeals no later than the 45-day window of time after receiving the assessment, should they feel their tax assessment is wrong or unfair.

The Atlanta BeltLine will be holding a free virtual information session on Tuesday, June 29 at 6:00 p.m. designed to help property owners understand their property tax statement and explore options available to them should they wish to appeal.

Individual virtual consultation sessions will also be available for property owners that wish to appeal and need guidance through the appeal process. The partnership will provide information on how to register for these consultations at the information session.

This workshop is part of the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership 2021 Home Empowerment Workshop series supported by Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and The Annie E. Casey Foundation.
