ATLANTA — Birmingham Legion FC defeated Atlanta United 2 in a close 1-0 upset. It is their first loss at home this season.

Atlanta's goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo, had a season-high of six saves in the game. This match was also Tony Annan's final game with Atlanta United since he is about to begin his next career as head coach for the University of South Carolina.

In the first half, Atlanta United 2 dominated the ball with 62% possession. Early in the fourth minute, Atlanta had their golden chance when Mikey Ambrose gave the ball to Connor Stanley near the edge of the box. Stanley then drove the ball to the end line and kicked a shot, but it went to the side of the goalpost.

Another chance came to Atlanta in the second half when Ronald Hernandez went through a defender on the right flank and served the ball to Aiden McFadden. McFadden was able to kick a right-footed shot but was blocked.

In the second half, Ríos Novo saved five bullseye shots. On the 63rd minute, Birmingham's Bruno Lapa Brooke fired a shot near the corner of the six-yard box. Ríos Novo was able to push the ball off the field.

The penalty kick was a heaven-sent for Birmingham as they finally managed to penetrate Ríos Novo's robust defense. It was the second minute of stoppage time when the referee ruled that Tyler Wolff brought down Jaden Servania to the penalty kick. Bruno Lapa Brooke stepped in and kicked the ball from the bottom right corner and Atlanta's 18-year-old goalkeeper guessed the other way, which gave Birmingham their first goal and the match.

Atlanta United 2 will return to face Louisville City FC at Fifth Third Bank on June 6, 7.30 p.m.
