AKRON — When it comes to the comic and graphic novel world, comic writers often make us, the readers, fall into the world the writer is creating. Comics sometimes could be a medium to express the writers’ expression containing fiction, critics, satires, or just pure entertainment.

Unfortunately, the writers are often less-known compared to their work. Allow us to introduce you to four Akron native comic writers and some of their work.

1. Dan Gorman

Dan Gorman studied Medical Illustration at Cleveland Institute of Art in 1999 and started his work as a Sketch Card Artist in 2010. He began his work on over 150 Licensed Trading Cards sets such as Marvel, DC, Star Wars, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, Alien, and many more.

He also began to work as a Comic Book penciler in 2012 and has been published by Dark Horse (Grindhouse), AC Comics (FemForce), Empire Comics Lab (Cemetery Plots), Source Point Press (The Rejected, Kringle) and Caliber Comics (Mississippi Zombie). His Akron-themed comics are The Akron Knight webcomic and weekly webcomic for The Akron RubberDucks Tales.

2. Joseph A. Michael

Joseph A. Michael asserted himself as a “sci-fi fantasy author that writes about new and compelling universes and post-apocalyptic worlds” on his official website josephamichael.com. He is the author of The Atomic Blonde and Only Human. He is also a lead writer, co-founder, and publisher at Heroes for Causes, a comical team of superheroes representing children that fight debilitating diseases.

3. Jacob Luther

Jacob Luther is the creator of Towny Town Comics. He commented about his comics in his Twitter account biography, remarking them as “eccentric situations so you don’t have to live through them yourself.”

He also wrote that each of his comics begins with some usual events but then twisting out of control with every successive panel. His comics usually consist of four panels, with the twist in the last one.

4. Ted Sikora

Ted Sikora is an Akron-based comic book writer and also filmmaker. He is the president of an Indie studio and publisher, Hero Tomorrow Comics.

His works include Bloom, Punchline & the Vaude-Villains, Tap Dance Killer, and Apama The Undiscovered Animal. His work on filmmaking are a dark comedy indie, Hero Tomorrow and Move On! documentary, and hundreds of shorts in documentaries, music videos, and education.

We hope that you can find the time to check out these writers and explore their works. Please refer to your local comic book stores or purchase from their websites directly. Your support helps artists and their art thrive.
