Have you run out of recipe ideas for the house? Maybe you’re tired of following along with the gluttony-inducing recipes given on popular television programs. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had healthy options that were not only fun to make but tasted great as well? Wouldn’t it be even better if your child wanted to help you prepare the healthy food as well (without complaining you’re not ordering pizza or ice cream)? Well with the upcoming Farm-to-Fork Culinary Camp here in Tucson you’ll receive all of that and then some.

The Farm-to-Fork Culinary Camp is a day camp, which is perfect if you’re looking for a few hours to yourself during the summer months, or if you’re just not sure what to do to help keep your child busy. It starts at 8 AM and runs until 11 PM at the Angel Charity for Children Culinary Education Center (located at 2201 East Roger Road. This is their new location so if you’ve been to the old location, don’t head there).

The camp begins on Monday, June 28, and will end on July 30. Don’t worry if you’re not able to send your child every single day. The camp is broken down into four sessions. The first is June 28 through July 2, the second is July 6 through July 9, the third is July 19 through July 23, and the final session is July 26 through July 30.

During the camp, all children will learn about harvesting food directly from the on-site garden. They will learn how to identify ripe produce and even some tips on how to care for the garden to ensure it grows as vibrant as possible. Once they have collected their produce they will then take the food inside and learn how to prepare a variety of recipes.

At the same time, the children (ages 10 to 13) will learn different culinary techniques. This is perfect for any child that loves to cook or who enjoys learning about food.

In order to register for the event, you need to place a non-refundable deposit of $25. This will hold your child’s spot, but the tuition of $350 is required on the first day of each given session (each session is $350). This will cover all costs associated with the camp, including meals for your child, the produce they pick, and everything they prepare. It will also help cover the costs of bringing in professionals to help educate and demonstrate different culinary techniques.

The Farm-to-Fork Culinary Camp is put on by the UA Tucson Village Farm organization, which strives to educate both young and old of the importance of fresh produce and locally sourced gardening. If you want to learn more about the organization or stay on top of upcoming events they are putting on, make sure to follow their Facebook page, as this is the best location for real-time updates.

If you are interested in sending your child to one of these events it is a good idea to register sooner rather than later. Spots are limited and are filling up fast. Most of the non-refundable $25 placeholders have already been sold out for the majority of the sessions. However, if you’re able to purchase the full tuition cost there are these options available. Additionally, if you find one of the sessions you are interested in is full you can contact UA Tucson Village Farm through their Facebook page and ask to be placed on a waiting list. There will likely be those who drop out, which leaves spots available. They will be happy to help assist with whatever questions you have.
