HOUSTON — Houston BCycle Art Stations is calling Houston-based artists or artistic teams for design submissions. The selected creations will be used for the next BCycle Art Station at Harrisburg and Sampson in Houston’s East End in front of New Hope Housing.

Previously, designs from two local Houston-based artists, Magdalena Esparza and Kate Vance, were chosen from 28 submissions among Houston’s art community to decorate the stations at LaBranch & Alabama and Brazos & McGowen. These designs aim to celebrate biking in Midtown.

For three weeks in April, Esparza and Vance carried out this project, which received funding from the Midtown Management District. Esparza created a geometric design called “The Harlequin Station” using spray paint, while Vance came up with her splashy design called “Midtown Swirl”, which was hand-painted with acrylic. Esparza and Vance received a $3,000 grant for their winning entries.

People who wish to submit their proposals must meet particular requirements. One of the requirements calls for Houston-based artists or teams, ideally from the East End. All applicants should include at least a 2-dimensional mock-up of the station design, including nine bike docks, a kiosk, and a wayfinding stand. Design installation should use materials that can withstand Houston heat and sun for at least six years. The winning proposal will be awarded $3,000 and full funding for its installation.

The application opens from May 17 to June 18, and the organizers will announce the winning entry on June 23.
