The San Francisco Police Department’s Missing Person’s Unit are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Jean Chang Kan Fung.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the beloved 84-year-old grandmother who loves the outdoors, was reported missing from her Richmond District residence on May 28, 2021, when she did not return home from a walk.

She lives in the Inner Richmond but was last seen near the Marina District Safeway around 4:00PM. At the time. She was wearing a red or pink puffy jacket, purple sweater, brown pants, black “UGG” boots and a red beanie with an “LG” logo.

Ms. Fung is known to frequent Clement Street, the Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field and the Graton and River Rock Casinos.She is considered at risk due to her age and possible medical conditions. There is also a language barrier as she speaks Toisan and Cantonese and her family believes this could limit her chances of asking for help and could make her feel scared and isolated.

Via statement, the family of Ms. Fung said;

Our entire family has been extremely worried since Friday. We know she’s out there. We don’t know how she is, whether she is hungry or needs help. We are pleading with everyone to please keep an eye out for her. She speaks Cantonese and Toisan. We miss her. Thank you to all who have assisted and continue to assist in this search. Our family has always been her number one priority. Because of the language barrier, we believe she is out there feeling helpless and scared. Please help reunite us.

The District Attorney’s Office has offered help to the San Francisco Police Department to locate Ms. Fung, their Victim Services Division has staff members who are fluent in Cantonese and Toisan so this could help move forward the investigation.

Yesterday, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin hosted a virtual press conference requesting urgent public assistance in search for Ms. Fung;

My staff has offered assistance to SFPD during this investigation, and this is an urgent search that requires the help and vigilance of the public as well. We must all do everything we can to help bring Ms. Fung home quickly and safely. In the meantime, our Victim Services team will continue to offer all the support we can to Ms. Fung’s family, said District Attorney Boudin

Supervisor for District 1,Connie Chan, where Ms.Fung resides, was particularly concerned about the fact that she has been missing for more than five days.

It seems there were missed opportunities for her to return home safely if it weren’t for the lack of language support and cultural competency. Our priority now is to find Ms. Fung, who is an elderly immigrant who speaks the Toisan dialect of Chinese. At the same time, we need to reflect on how we can better our support our DA and SFPD to make sure they have the resources to bring Ms. Fung home. We also need San Franciscans to keep an eye out for Ms. Fung and to call the SFPD if you see her , said Supervisor Connie Chan
