The Associated Press released a statement about the upcoming heat wave in the Las Vegas area. While this may be no surprise to most -- as it is June and it is the middle of the desert -- what is a surprise is the opening of cooling stations.
The article states that the Las Vegas area is expected to ride an intense weather hot streak this first week of June 2021. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas issued an excessive heat warning, with temperatures predicted to either tie or break previous record highs.
The warning runs Wednesday at 11 a.m. thru Friday at 9 p.m., with temperatures expected to hit between 105 and 110 degrees (40.5 and 43.3 Celsius).
Clark County officials announced they’ll open daytime cooling stations beginning Tuesday at community and recreation centers in Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas and at Catholic Charities downtown.
Two centers also will open in the Colorado River tourist resort of Laughlin, where temperatures are could reach 112 degrees (44.5 Celsius).
Fire officials issued a reminder for people to stay hydrated with plenty of water.
Triple-digit weather is also expected to hit parts of Arizona and California. If the Las Vegas cooling stations are successful, perhaps these neighboring states will also create cooling stations as well. Time will tell. In the meantime, if you are in one of these locations where extreme heat is expected, take precaution. Drink water. Don't leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. And listen to your body if it is in distress.
