There are quite a few animal shelters and charities that are doing great work in Houston. With their dedicated work, they have been able to find new homes for thousands of animals. Most of these centers depend entirely on private donations, receiving no Federal, State, or local funding.

If you want to help out in this noble cause, here are 5 animal shelters that are highly recommended by animal lovers for the work they are doing.

1. Houston Humane Society

The HHS is an organization dedicated to the well-being of animals. They work diligently towards ending animal abuse, cruelty, and overpopulation. They are completely dependent on donations to provide their services. The HHS strives to create animal welfare awareness in the Houston community. They achieve this by running several programs for Houston residents and their pets.

Programs include humane education, pet adoption, and providing a low-cost spay/neuter or wellness clinic. However, before taking your pet for spaying and neutering, you should not take any chances and check the credibility of the doctor performing the operation. Just because it is low-cost does not mean it has to be low-quality! They also conduct R.A.I.D.E.R cruelty investigations to help save pets from abusive households.

2. A Place for Peanuts

Theirs is a non-profit sanctuary for horses, started in 2016. A majority of their rescues are miniature horses dumped by their owners because they were unwanted. They were destined to die at kill pens, and the organization has able to rescue more than 250 horses in the meantime. The rescued animals come from all over the state and are kept in a Place for Peanuts to see they receive rehabilitation and, in many cases, a new home.

Many of these noble animals become therapy horses helping with equine therapy. Beneficiaries include veterans, children, and individuals with special needs. Some of these animals also proceed on to have lucrative show careers. These animals are also available for sponsorship if you want to take care of them.

3. Greater Houston German Shepherd Dog Rescue

This breed-specific group is dedicated to the rescue of German Shepherd dogs. These dogs are rescued from public shelters where they have been scheduled for being euthanized. Some of the animals have been directly surrendered by their owners for various reasons. The dogs receive all necessary healthcare including spaying or neutering.

They are also microchipped and placed in a foster home to be adopted. This amazing group also conducts education drives in the community to raise awareness about the plight of German Shepherds. They have been working for more than ten years and welcomes donations to take care of these great animals.

4. Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The Houston SPCA helps thousands of animals each year. They help all animals, including dogs and cats, small mammals such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and hamsters, farm animals, and birds. Native wildlife in need of help receives support from the affiliated Wildlife Rehab and Education Organization. They are the sole shelter in the Greater Gulf Coast area that can provide humane shelters for big cats such as rescued lions and tigers. They also provide shelter to bears and other exotic animals, including primates.

The animals are not kept in an overcrowded place. All dogs receive daily walks. Numerous orphaned, injured and sick animals are showered with love and care until they are given away to a caring foster home. All animals are spayed and neutered before they are sent away to their new homes.

5. Bunny Buddies

Bunny buddies aim to rescue rabbits and help them find a new home. They emphasize spaying and neutering all the animals before finding an adorable home for them. The homeless rabbits are provided with exercise and attention until they find a new home. They have been able to provide foster homes to hundreds of bunnies and saved hundreds more from unwanted births. They serve the Greater Houston area.
