Genting's Resorts World is set to open in Las Vegas, just as their major resort in Malaysia has had to close, due to the global pandemic.
The Las Vegas Resorts World location is scheduled to open on June 24, 2021, and is the first major resort to open since the global pandemic. The opening date was pushed back multiple times, and the road construction surrounding the property is not quite done, but the resort is opening. It could be just in time for Genting stock prices as well.
As reported in Inside Asian Gaming, Genting Malaysia has announced the closure of all resort facilities at Resorts World Genting (RWG), other than essential services, after Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin implemented a nationwide lockdown from 1 June.
As noted by Inside Asian Gaming, it was initially to run for two weeks until June, 14, 2021, but likely longer, the lockdown comes after Malaysia recorded more than 8,000 COVID-19 cases in a single day for the first time late last week.
Resorts World Genting had already suspended casino operations but said Monday, “Following the government’s announcement on the nationwide total lockdown, RWG will be temporarily closed until further notice. Essential resort-based services such as security, bomba, utilities and clinics will remain operational.”
Resorts World Genting in Malaysia previously closed for three months in 2020, from 18 March until 19 June, following the initial outbreak of COVID-19 and implementation of a Movement Control Order by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin. It also closed for four weeks from January 22, 2021, until February 17, 2021, under Malaysia’s MCO 2.0.
Resorts World Las Vegas is a much anticipated addition to the Las Vegas Strip. Applications from would-be employees came in at record rates. This is one more step to getting the Las Vegas economy back to a comfortable equilibrium.
