HOUSTON - The Houston Independent School District will soon be hosting its first-ever Men’s Leadership Summit this month to encourage men to pursue their careers in education. The Men’s Leadership Summit will be held on June 5th, from 9 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., at Westbury High School. Participants may also participate virtually at Austin, Heights, Sharpstown, or North Houston Early College high schools.

There is a gender gap among educators in the United States. More women than men are working in the field. Men are also less likely to stay in the profession. Due to those facts, the summit set its goals to empower and inspire men to become educators. Boys within the high school age interested in becoming teachers or educators are also welcome to participate.

According to interim Superintendent Grenita Lathan, having both male and female educators will enrich students’ social and emotional development. It will also provide a well-rounded experience of education for students.

“We hope this conference energizes men who are currently teachers and administrators and encourages others to become part of a noble profession,” Lathan said.

World-renowned educational leadership consultant and principal Buruti Kafele will be featured as a keynote speaker at the summit. This conference is conceived with the belief that students’ success depends on various factors, including academic knowledge, engagement, physical and emotional health, as well as school and community support.

In-person attendance to Houston Independent School District’s Men’s Leadership Summit is limited, as health protocols apply. Those who are interested can register at https://mensleadershipsummit2021.sched.com/.
