AKRON, OH - In collaboration with 91.3 The Summit, Akron Public Schools plans to air its students' poetry readings. The Summit will broadcast the readings on Wednesday, June 2021, between 4:15 and 4:30 p.m. Through this collaboration, Akron Public Schools aims to introduce its students' creative works to the general public while raising awareness regarding key issues.
The school's English teacher at Ellet CLC, Kristy Nelson, created the poetry reading project. This program aims to dig deeper into students' passion for poetry. Nelson will ask students to perform a spoken word of poetry about a cause they believe in and an organization that seeks to ease the problem. From 91.3 The Summit, Nancy Sinning and Brad Savage will assist this program and provide the avenue for Akron Public School's students to create creative work.
A winner from each semester will be participating in an interview with The Summit, where they will discuss their choice of cause and organization before performing their poetry. The winner for the first semester, Kaylee Johnsons, with bring the topic of suicide.
The second semester's winner, Alison Kramer, will also join the event to bring the topic of animal testing. After the interview and reading session, Kristy Nelson will post the MP3 and the links to the related organizations on the APS website.
APS enrolls more than 21,000 students from nine high schools, 11 middle schools, and 33 elementary schools, two preschools and other specialty schools. The district, encompassing approximately 62 square miles, is one of Ohio's largest and most diverse school systems.
