1. Mt. Katadhin via Abol Trail

As the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katadhin is an incredible part of Baxter State Park - and perhaps its most iconic. The top of Katadhin can be an emotional place for many. It's the completion of a dream - one that many planned, prepared, and hiked for months. Make sure to respect others as they finish the trail.

This peak is infamous for its Knife's Edge section of trail. The Abol Trail won't take you along this hair-raising section of trail though, so it's a great option for those not quite up to the adventure.

This trail is the most direct route up Katadhin, and because of that, it will get you working for it. If you're looking for a more gradual ascent up this famous Maine peak, check out the Saddle Trail. For a more adventurous experience, you can also do the Cathedral Trail and scramble up some open rock faces.

If you're feeling up to the challenge, you should check out the Katadhin-Hamlin Loop. If you're afraid of trails with dramatic plunges on either side, the Abol trail may be your best bet.

2. Doubletop Trail

Sitting at the western boundary of Baxter State Park, Doubletop offers fantastic views of the other peaks in the northern part of the park. This strenuous 9.8 mile hike will challenge you throughout, with the toughest section happening right below the summit.

You'll get plenty of nature on this challenging hike. The trail winds through thick stands of northeastern pine forest on its way to the summit. You'll be climbing up and over rocks, so make sure to bring sturdy hiking shoes. The views from the summit will be worth every step.

To get to the top, start at the Kidney pond trailhead and follow the Doubletop Trail all the way to the peak. Make sure to bring plenty of water - you'll need it for this one.

3. The Owl

Just two miles west from the top of Katadhin, the Owl is a small peak that rises from the forested valley floor. Though it's not the toughest peak on this list, it offers some surprisingly beautiful views.

From the top, you'll enjoy a different perspective on Katadhin and the ridgelines that accompany it. This peak gives you a 360 degree view that's up close and personal to the main attraction in Baxter State Park. You'll have an incredible vantage point from which to see Katadhin in all its glory.

To get to this natural viewpoint, take the namesake Owl Trail to the peak. It's a trail that becomes increasingly more challenging the further up you go. Make sure you bring plenty of water if tackling this one during the summer time.
