At 7:13 pm on Monday a surprising incident was reported at CA-101 and Lindero Canyon Road—firefighters reported a single engine plane was forced to land on the southbound side of the 101 freeway.

The occupants successfully and safely exited the plane after making the emergency landing. No injuries were reported.

Traffic delays on the freeway are expected as fire responders walk the plane off of the road and reopen sections of the freeway.

A Citizen app user took a video showing a white plane being escorted through neighborhood streets.

Two helicopters hovered above the scene as the car was escorted away from traffic.

Before landing, the plane was seen flying at a very low altitude above houses in the neighborhood.

According to a Tweet by Desmond Shaw, the small plane made a successful emergency landing on the 101 freeway in Westlake. It is “unclear what prompted it but hats off to the pilot who stuck it perfectly on the Eastbound lanes near Lindero Canyon. The fire department just pushed it off to Reyes Adobe. No injuries!”

California Highway Patrol briefly closed all eastbound lanes of the 101 Freeway so fire crews could get through to move the plane to the right shoulder.

However, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the Reyes Adobe Road offramp remained closed.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the emergency landing. That part remains a mystery.

Usually airplanes make emergency landings at nearby airports. Not this time. Los Angeles continues to keep things exciting.
